What is Pilates

Pilates is an effective and fun approach to exercise which combines the mind and body. It is a gentle, non-aerobic programme which lengthens and strengthens the muscles, improving your posture without stressing the joints or heart.

All classes are in groups but are tailored to fit each client. This means that Pilates is as beneficial to the average person or ambitious athlete as well as to someone with an injury or who is pregnant. All Pilates exercises focus on precise, smooth movements emphasising correct posture, breathing and core stability in order to achieve an even, balanced and strong body.

The Pilates Method is based on the philosophy of Joseph Pilates (1880-1967), a German nurse and sports movement enthusiast who immigrated to the U.S.A. The first Pilates studio opened in New York City in 1926. Well-known choreographers such as Martha Graham and George Balanchine sent their dancers to Joseph Pilates. Since then, the method has spread to the general population and is today one of the most effective and popular training methods worldwide.
